Plastic is a project that came about one september day. I had set out to take a few shots of an old warehouse in Leghorn where I had been some months before and scouted throughout taking pictures. It was one of the last buildings still part of the old port that had been probably turned in to a shipyard. I went back at the end of the summer but could’nt find it, I felt lost, and then I realized it was there, in front of me, it had been torn down and the diggers were in the process of massing the remains of the detritus.
Sad and disappointed I tried to think where I could go and take the photos I wanted to take with the person I had chosen for the project…what could I do? It was difficult to find somewhere else there and then and it was also beginning to rain. I looked to the north and noticed that the sky had opened up, I could reach Marina di Vecchiano in half an hour and work there. I did not have long to decide but procrastinating would surely help me find a solution.
We arrived at Marina di Vecchiano an hour and a half before sunset, the beach deserted, the sea rough, and menacing clouds overhead. A strong wind picked up and it was about to rain cats and dogs. I remembered having a plastic sheet in my bag that I used to cover my furniture with, when I opened it up I saw that in that thin plastic sheet was an idea. What you see now was its natural evolution…
The idea is to hide the subject, using deceit and an obvious lie that steals it from the rawness of the portrait and watch it come out rudely from the story we have sewed upon him, suddenly, the wind as an accomplice.
Full of his discomfort, his dreaming, and bringing out the part of him that is most unreal, unconscious and hidden.
